A sea of interesting racing dinghies and not a big tub in sight. This year's RYA Dinghy Show will be held on the 2-3 March at Alexandra Place, London. Some year I'm going to save up my pennies and jet over to experience this. There is nothing in this country that remotely compares. More info here. |
Totally agree. Best boat show ever anywhere. Why can't they do something like this in the US?
ReplyDeleteThat's a reoccurring question in my mind. Certainly there must be enough interest to support one comparable dinghy show over here. I think one issue is that Europe in general and the UK in particular have many more dinghy classes than we have in the U.S. Niche dinghies like the Cherub and National 12 would be a great addition to the mainstream classes that dominate small boat racing in this country. Until we attain more dinghy diversity the RYA annual show will be THE show to attend.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall the RYA Dinghy Show that I went to (and it must be at least 20 years ago) a lot of the stands were actually run by dinghy classes themselves, not manufacturers (although of course they were well represented too.) It was a chance for each class to reach out to potential new members.
ReplyDeleteAnd a nice hall to boot. Puts Javits to shame. But then, they only host stinkpot shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that when I went with my son the show was still being held at Crystal Palace.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds correct. Years ago a friend that sails International Canoes went over for the show and I think it was at Crystal Palace. I'll be racing down in the St. Pete area the end of the month so my time and $$$ are committed for this year. Hopefully some year the schedule will work so that I can do both.
